Fourteen little libraries in east Salem burn through 400 to 500 books a month. The Rotary club that built them needs help keeping up.
The East Salem Rotary Club's annual book drive, run in partnership with Salem independent bookstore Book Bin, accepts donations of new or gently used children's books through the end of September.

The libraries are "heavily used," co-chair Catherine Carlson told Salem Reporter.
Rotarians built and installed the 14 little libraries starting in 2020, placing them in high-need pockets of east Salem that do not have a public library branch nearby. Locations include spots near schools, multi-family housing developments, preschool programs, churches and a managed micro-shelter site for homeless adults and children, according to the club's website.
Each box carries a sticker identifying the East Salem Rotary Club as its sponsor.
Books are stocked in both English and Spanish to serve the neighborhood's families. Reading proficiency among children in east Salem falls below the statewide average, according to the club's website.
Individual club members have adopted specific libraries and keep them filled with children's books year-round. The club also receives annual matching grants from the regional Rotary district to help purchase books, but says the need outpaces available funding.
