Salem residents can test earthquake simulators, tour expert-led booths and try an escape room at a free Ready Fair on Saturday, Oct. 10.

The Oregon Department of Emergency Management (OEM) announced the event alongside Gov. Tina Kotek's proclamation of September as Preparedness Month in Oregon.

OEM released the proclamation Monday, Aug. 31, as part of its "Be 2 Weeks Ready" campaign, a multilingual toolkit that helps households prepare to be self-sufficient for at least two weeks after a major disaster.

The Ready Fair runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 3930 Fairview Industrial Drive SE in Salem. No registration is required.

Booths will cover emergency alerts, food and water planning, and sanitation. The fair will also feature kid-friendly stations, food trucks and a chance to win a fully stocked emergency go-bag.

Two more free events follow in October.

On Thursday, Oct. 15, at 10:16 a.m., OEM is encouraging Oregonians to join the Great Oregon ShakeOut, a statewide earthquake drill that practices the Drop, Cover and Hold On technique.

The following weekend brings the Great Oregon Camp-In, running Friday, Oct. 16, through Sunday, Oct. 18.

Households practice living without utilities, refine their emergency plans and test their supplies. Participants can join for a few hours or the full weekend.

"Our goal is to meet Oregonians where they are, provide accessible resources, and encourage everyday steps that build resilience long before an emergency happens," Kayla Thompson, OEM community preparedness coordinator, said in a statement.

OEM Director Erin McMahon said the agency wants every Oregonian to have access to preparedness tools ahead of emergencies.

The proclamation comes days after Kotek conducted an aerial survey of active wildfires on Aug. 27, warning that September would likely bring more wildfire challenges.

Federal, tribal, state, local and private-sector partners are coordinating on disaster prevention and response, according to the proclamation.

OEM is also running a student art contest focused on disaster preparedness, as we reported Aug. 30.
