Family Building Blocks is looking for Salem residents to help run its free Riverfront Family Fest on August 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Riverfront Park.
The nonprofit, which serves as the Relief Nursery for Marion and Polk counties, posted the volunteer call on Monday, July 21.
The organization says the annual health and safety resource fair draws nearly 4,000 parents and children and features 65 vendors offering family-friendly activities and resources.
Five volunteer roles
Kat Hills, a Family Building Blocks staff member who posted the recruitment notice, listed five ways community members can pitch in:
- Gate welcoming — greeting families as they arrive
- Face painting — supplies and suggested designs provided
- Activity station — staffing the Family Building Blocks booth
- Baby Comfort Station — helping keep a calm, cool space where infants can take a break
- Ground support — keeping Riverfront Park clean during the event

About the organization
Founded in 1997, Family Building Blocks provides therapeutic classrooms, home visiting, and parenting education at no cost to families with children from prenatal to age five. In 2025, the nonprofit served more than 1,600 children and 800 families. It operates locations in Salem, Stayton, Independence, and Woodburn and relies on more than 400 volunteers annually.
