Pentacle Theatre in Salem opens "Angel Street (Gaslight)" on Friday, Oct. 2, staging the 1939 psychological thriller that gave English the word "gaslighting."
The production, directed by Gregory Jolivette, runs through Oct. 24 at the theater's performance venue at 324 52nd Ave. NW. Patrick Hamilton's play is recommended for ages 13 and older.
Set in Victorian London, the story follows Bella Manningham as she begins doubting her own sanity. Flickering gas lights, missing household items and strange noises plague her while her husband, Jack, offers reassurance that masks darker motives.
When Inspector Rough of Scotland Yard arrives, he suspects Jack is wanted for a murder in the same house 15 years earlier. The inspector works to restore Bella's confidence and expose the truth.
The Polk County Itemizer-Observer reported the cast includes Delany Sump as Mrs. Manningham, Christopher Gray as Mr. Manningham and Rob Sim as Inspector Rough. Clair Coulson steps into the Mrs. Manningham role on Oct. 14 and Oct. 21. Danna Swanenberg plays Elizabeth, and Amy Marie Miller plays Nancy.
Evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Matinees start at 2 p.m. Specific matinee dates are not listed online; readers can check the full schedule at pentacletheatre.org or by calling 503-485-4300.
