Salem-Keizer Public Schools released a 59-title reading list for students in kindergarten through 12th grade to mark National Hispanic Heritage Month.
The district posted the list Tuesday, Sept. 15, organized into four grade bands: Early Readers for grades K–2 (15 titles), Elementary for grades 3–5 (14 titles), Middle School for grades 6–8 (15 titles) and Upper Grades for 9–12 (15 titles). The observance runs through Thursday, Oct. 15.
Younger readers will find Sonia Sotomayor's "Turning Pages: My Life Story" and Margarita Engle's "Dancing Hands: How Teresa Carreño Played the Piano for President Lincoln." Middle schoolers get Sandra Cisneros' "The House on Mango Street" and Pam Muñoz Ryan's "Esperanza Rising."
High school titles include Aiden Thomas' "Cemetery Boys" and Elizabeth Acevedo's "Clap When You Land."
The district said the list supports learning beyond the month-long observance. Stories and contributions of diverse communities belong in the curriculum year-round, the district said in its announcement.
Sept. 15 was chosen as the national start date because it marks the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates its independence on Sept. 16. Chile celebrates on Sept. 18.
Beyond the book list, the district pointed teachers and families to the Oregon Historical Society and a Hispanic Heritage website as supplemental classroom resources. The full list is online.
