A 2-alarm fire damaged the roof of Hallman Elementary School in northeast Salem late Thursday, Sept. 17, forcing the K-5 school to close Friday, Sept. 18.
The fire at 4000 Deerhaven Drive N.E. was reported at 10:06 p.m. and kept crews on scene for nearly five hours, according to dispatch records cited by Salem Reporter. At least 14 units from the Salem Fire Department, Marion County Fire District and Keizer Fire District responded, according to PulsePoint data reported by the Statesman Journal. Salem Police officers also assisted with traffic near the school.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
School officials sent a message to families early Friday morning announcing the closure due to the fire and the unknown extent of damage.
Aaron Harada, spokesman for Salem-Keizer Public Schools, said the district's own crews were part of the overnight response.
"The school's maintenance and safety crews responded to the fire alongside emergency personnel," Harada said.
Harada said the district will continue to evaluate the building's condition and update families about school on Monday, Sept. 21. Hallman Elementary serves approximately 328 students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
Roof damage was visible in photos of the building. No official damage estimate has been released, and the Salem Fire Department has not publicly identified a cause.
