Salem families looking to fill the last full week of August have options ranging from Indigenous history to Y2K nostalgia to a free movie under the stars.

The Willamette Heritage Center hosts a Family Fun Fridays workshop on the Kalapuya, the Indigenous people of the Willamette Valley, on Friday, Aug. 21, from 10:15 to 11:45 a.m. at 1313 Mill St.

Children and families will learn about native plants and animals, how the Kalapuya managed natural resources and the impact of Euro-American settlers on the Kalapuya population, according to the center's event listing on Travel Salem.

The Willamette Heritage Center said on Instagram on July 31 that families will investigate how the Kalapuya community was impacted by Euro-American explorers, fur trappers, missionaries and Oregon Trail immigrants.

Admission is $15 for adults, $13 for seniors 65 and older, $11 for students and children ages 6 to 17, and free for children under 6, according to the Travel Salem listing. Pre-registration is required. Contact the Willamette Heritage Center at (503) 585-7012 for details.
