Metrognome, a Portland-based rehearsal studio company, opens its first location outside Portland at 676 Church St. NE in downtown Salem.
The facility holds its grand opening Sunday, Sept. 27. The company calls the Salem site "Cherry City," and its website lists it as the 11th Metrognome location, with the other 10 spread across Portland neighborhoods.
The studio offers two ways in. Monthly lockout rooms start at $285 per month with 24/7 key-code access and no long-term contract. Bands can bring their own gear and leave it set up between practices, according to a Press Play Salem feature published in the magazine's Fall 2026 issue. Hourly rooms start at $15 per hour and come equipped with drums, amps, a PA system, microphones and cables. Those rooms range from spaces for one or two people to larger studios that fit eight or more.
The Salem location includes 49 monthly spaces and three hourly studios, Salem Reporter reported in January. Group memberships for businesses or nonprofits start at $250 per month.
Running the Salem studio is community manager Matador Hamilton. Hamilton is a Salem native who has played bass and guitar in bands since he was 14 and now plays in the band Giantess. Around 2010, he and his metal band Feel Connected were turned away from several Salem storage units when they looked for a place to rehearse, according to Salem Reporter.
Now he manages one.
Each hourly studio features themed, artist-styled decor that the company says doubles as a backdrop for photos and videos. All studios are soundproofed with no volume limits. Other amenities include Wi-Fi, dedicated electrical circuits and equipment insurance up to $15,000 with a $0 deductible.
The What's Happening Salem podcast has recorded multiple episodes at the facility since January. Host Jacob Espinoza praised the space during a February episode: "It's great having a resource like this in our community."
Metrognome's Salem page lists 19 monthly spaces still open. Musicians can book hourly rooms or inquire about monthly studios at metrognome.com/salem or by calling 503-832-0811.
