Salem police arrested a 27-year-old woman they say started a fire at a northeast Salem apartment complex on Tuesday, Sept. 29.

Saydee Villalpando, a resident of Capital Mall Apartments in the 700 block of Winter Street NE, was taken into custody without incident and booked into Marion County Jail, the Salem Police Department announced. She faces charges of first-degree arson and recklessly endangering another person.

First-degree arson is a Class A felony under Oregon law.

Salem Fire Department crews responded to the structure fire at approximately 12:32 p.m. that day. Firefighters contained the blaze to Villalpando's unit before it could spread to neighboring apartments, according to the department. The unit sustained extensive damage.

No injuries were reported.

Salem Police Felony Crimes Unit detectives worked alongside Salem Fire Department deputy fire marshals to investigate the cause of the fire. That investigation led to Villalpando's arrest, police said.

Police have not released details about what started the fire or what evidence connected Villalpando to the blaze, KGW reported. The investigation remains ongoing.

The Marion County District Attorney's Office is handling prosecution. No arraignment date or next court appearance has been announced.

Anyone with information about the fire can contact Salem Police through the department's non-emergency line.
